Conceived in 2014, Pull Down The Sun create atmospheric and groove-heavy music shaped and inspired by the curious history and scenic nature of New Zealand/Aotearoa
Formed in 2014, Pull Down The Sun crafts atmospheric, groove-laden music inspired by the rich history and striking landscapes of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Deeply rooted in Māori heritage and mythology, their sound weaves storytelling and heavy riffs into an unforgettable sonic experience.
Pull Down The Sun has proudly shared stages with renowned international acts such as Northlane, Make Them Suffer, Thornhill, The Ocean, Quicksand, and Caligula’s Horse, as well as prominent New Zealand bands including Crooked Royals, Banks Arcade, Devilskin, and Kora. Known for their dynamic live performances, the band combines the raw intensity of late ’90s Deftones with the modern edge of metal icons like Gojira and Isis, creating a journey that shifts effortlessly from heavy and chaotic to darkly atmospheric and uplifting.
Their 2020 debut album, Of Valleys and Mountains, is a vibrant concept piece inspired by Māori legends of the Patupaiarehe and Turehu—ancient, mythical beings entwined with the fabric of New Zealand’s past. The album was mixed by Zorran Mendonsa (New Way Home, Coridian), mastered by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, SikTh), and features artwork by Chris Panatier (Letters from the Colony).
With its authentic immersion into Aotearoa’s cultural roots, the album was lauded for its emotional depth and musical precision:
“The album as a whole feels very cohesive, taking the listener on an emotive journey that is both brutal and beautiful. I love how they have also immersed their Aotearoa roots and Māori song titles into their debut album in the most authentic way.” – Muzic.net.nz
In 2022, Of Valleys and Mountains was reissued by Pelagic Records on six exclusive vinyl editions, bringing their music to a global audience and earning over two million streams to date. The band further expanded their reach with the Pierce the Sea Tour across New Zealand and Australia.
Pull Down The Sun is currently working on their highly anticipated sophomore album, Of Rivers and Glaciers, the next chapter following Of Valleys and Mountains. This upcoming release promises to delve even deeper into their unique blend of storytelling and heavy grooves, cementing their place in the modern metal landscape.
